Early in her career, she lived aboard a boat and worked as a mate along the New England coast, gaining practical knowledge of navigation, dockage, tides, and marine logistics. She also grew up fishing throughout South Florida and later competed as a sponsored angler, earning tournament wins in Florida and the Bahamas.
